Dream Herb – Calea zacatechichi
Dream herb, also known as Calea zacatechichi, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae that is native to Mexico and Central America. Other common names include bitter-grass and Mexican Calea. It has been used for centuries by indigenous people as a tool for enhancing dream experiences and spiritual journeys. In recent years, it has gained popularity in the Western world as a natural supplement.
Dream herb is a small shrub that can grow up to six feet tall. It has narrow, elongated leaves that are covered in small hairs, giving them a fuzzy texture. The plant produces small yellow flowers and fruits that resemble small seed pods.
Isolated chemical compounds of Calea zacatechichi include flavones and sesquiterpene lactones. The sesquiterpenes known as caleicines and caleochromenes may play a role into the plants overall effects.
Historical reports describe rituals that involve using Calea zacatechichi in many forms, including drinking it in a tea, smoking the plant species, and placing it under a pillow. Dream herb has been used by the Chontal people of Oaxaca, Mexico for centuries as a tool for spiritual exploration. They prepare the plant by crushing the leaves and steeping them in hot water to create a tea. In addition, dream herb was also used traditionally for medicinal purposes. Due to its bitter nature, it has also been used as a digestive tonic.
