Elderberry – Organic – Sambucus nigra
Elder Flowers are the flower of the Elderberry tree, which is in the Adoxaceae family. Black Elderberries are edible when ripe, but slightly poisonous before; red berries are never safe to eat. All the green parts of the plant are poisonous with cyanogenic glycosides. But,Elder Flowers are commonly infused into refreshing drinks throughout Northern Europe and the Balkans. The popularity of such drinks has lead to some widespread commercial productions of the Elder Flower style drink.
Safety: The raw fruit contains a component sambunigrin which may cause vomiting and severe diarrhea if ingested.
