Pink Lotus – Nelumbo nucifera
Also known as Indian Lotus or Sacred Lotus, this aquatic plant is one of two species in the family Nelumbonaceae that still exists today. While there are many benefits to this plant, it is considered invasive in some environments due to the large, dense colonies it can produce if released into natural areas from cultivation. Its native distribution is wide, ranging from India and Sri Lanka (including the Himalayas) through northern Indochina and East Asia.
Pink lotus has been used throughout history as a food source and staple ingredient for a wide range of traditional herbal remedies. The starchy rhizomes of the lotus are commonly eaten in China, India, Japan, and other Asian countries. It has deep spiritual meaning to Hindu and Buddhist practices, symbolizing beauty, purity, and divinity.
Nelumbo nucifera has been cultivated in China for over 3,000 years not only for its cultural and ornamental value but also for medicinal uses. The leaves, flowers, stamens, seeds, and rhizomes are all used in different preparation methods. The leaves are rich in alkaloids, essential oils, organic acids, and flavonoids. All parts of the lotus plant contain high bioactive compounds showing a wide range of properties.
Herb Stomp also has several forms of Blue Lotus available.
