Sarsaparilla (Mexican) – Smilax medica
Also known as Jupicanga, Khao Yen, Smilax, and Zarzaparilla, Sarsaparilla Root is found in the Caribbean and other tropical regions. In the U.S. it is well known for the flavor it creates in root beer. A perennial wood climber, traditionally the roots are extracted to be used as a flavoring in beverages, candies, dairy desserts, and baked goods.
