About Cold-Process Soap
Cold-process soapmaking is the traditional method of producing solid soap: oils are combined with a lye solution (sodium hydroxide and water), and through the chemical reaction of saponification, the mixture transforms into soap and glycerin. The "cold" in cold-process refers to the lack of external heat after initial mixing - the saponification reaction generates its own warmth. The soap is then cured for 4-6 weeks, during which the chemical reaction completes and excess water evaporates, producing a harder, longer-lasting bar.
How to Use
Like any bar soap - wet, lather, wash, rinse. To extend the life of the bar, store in a dry soap dish that allows air circulation between uses. Cold-process bars typically produce a creamy lather rather than the high-volume foam of detergent-based "soaps."
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from store-bought soap?
Most commercial "soaps" are actually synthetic detergents; this is real traditional soap made by saponification.
Does it contain lye?
The cold-process method uses lye in production, but the saponification reaction transforms all the lye into soap. Properly cured cold-process soap contains no lye.
How long does the bar last?
2-4 weeks of daily use depending on usage patterns and how the bar is stored.
What's in this specific batch?
Check the label for the specific botanical ingredients in the batch you purchased.
Why does cold-process soap need to cure?
The 4-6 week cure allows complete saponification and water evaporation, producing a longer-lasting harder bar.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
Generally gentler than detergent soaps; specific scents and essential oils vary by batch - check the label if sensitive to specific botanicals.
