What is Lavender Essential Oil?
Lavender Essential Oil is the steam-distilled essential oil of Lavandula angustifolia, in the Lamiaceae family, a plant native to the Mediterranean. It is drawn from the flowering tops of the plant. This is English lavender, the classic lavender of Provence and Bulgaria.
About the oil
Lavender essential oil is distilled from the flowering tops of Lavandula angustifolia, English lavender. It is dominated by linalool and linalyl acetate, two sweet floral compounds, and is one of the most widely used and recognizable aromatic oils. It is cultivated across Provence in France, Bulgaria, England, and beyond.
The closely related lavandin hybrid (Lavandula × intermedia) contains more camphor and is more often used in cleaning products; true Lavandula angustifolia is the preferred fragrance and skin-care grade.
