Bergamot essential oil is cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus bergamia, the bergamot orange, grown mainly in Calabria on the southern coast of Italy. It is one of the most distinctive citrus oils, brighter and more complex than lemon or orange, with a faintly floral bitterness. Most people know its scent from Earl Grey tea, which is black tea flavored with bergamot.
The oil is a classic top note in perfumery and appears in countless citrus and floral compositions, including many of the great historical fragrances.

Bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin far more sensitive to ultraviolet light, so treated skin should not be exposed to sun or tanning beds for at least 12 to 18 hours.
