about this product

What is Black Walnut Hull?

Black Walnut Hull is the cut and sifted dried hull of Juglans nigra, the Eastern Black Walnut, a large deciduous tree in the walnut family (Juglandaceae) native to eastern and central North America. The hull is the thick outer husk that encloses the nut and its hard shell.

About the plant

Black walnut is best known for its dark, fine-grained heartwood, one of the most prized hardwoods in North America, and for its strongly flavored nuts. Each nut ripens inside a round green husk that darkens to brown and black as it matures and dries. The hulls are rich in tannins and in juglone, the compound behind the tree's well-known habit of suppressing other plants that grow beneath it. That same chemistry makes the hulls a strong natural dye: they have a long history of use for dyeing wool, cloth, and baskets a deep brown, and for making wood stain and ink. Black walnut hull also has a place in North American folk herbalism.

Frequently asked questions

Will black walnut hull stain?
Yes. The tannins and juglone in the hulls dye skin, fabric, and wood a deep brown, which is why they have long been used as a natural dye and wood stain. Gloves help if you want to avoid stained hands.

Good herb selection; reasonable prices. Lots of loose herbs, tinctures, smudge/incense, pipes. By herbs I mean various medicinal and alchemical herbs - I bought some lemon balm, organic roses, and lemongrass as well and bundles white sage and white pine. Good source for alternative/complimentary smoking herbs as well…

Herb Stomp (Sandy) is BY FAR the best Herb and Kratom store I have ever been to. In my 2.5 years of using Kratom, I have never been to a place as helpful as this! The employees are so so helpful! Usually when buying Kratom, I’m met with grumpy head shop owners who seem to want me to either spend out of my budget, or…

Awesome, knowledgeable staff. Great selection and quality of herbs and ethnobotanicals. I also appreciate that testing is done for contaminants and potency on certain herbs. In 8 years coming here I have yet to purchase anything stale or otherwise questionable quality. We technically *could* ask for more in a local…
