about this product

Butterbur Root Powder (Petasites hybridus)

Ground root of Petasites hybridus, Butterbur, the European herb that has shown clinical promise for traditional migraine and seasonal allergy support. However, the herb also contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) - the same compound class that has restricted use of coltsfoot and comfrey. Modern recommendations restrict butterbur use to specially-processed PA-free preparations only.

Important: PA-Free Requirement

Standard butterbur root contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) which can cause liver damage with regular internal consumption. The German pharmaceutical industry has developed specially processed PA-free butterbur preparations (notably "Petadolex") which are the form used in modern clinical studies and recommended for human consumption. Standard butterbur products that have not been specifically processed for PA removal should not be used internally. The herb has documented benefits but only the PA-free form is appropriate for internal use.

What is Butterbur?

Butterbur is a tall European herb with large rhubarb-like leaves (in fact, the leaves were traditionally used to wrap butter in summer, giving rise to the English common name). The plant has long traditional European use; modern clinical research has shown specific benefits for migraine prevention and seasonal allergy support using standardized PA-free preparations. The PA-free Petadolex product (developed by Weber & Weber in Germany) has been the focus of much of the modern clinical research; equivalent PA-free products are sold by several companies.

How to Use Butterbur (PA-Free Only)

If using internally for migraine prevention or allergy support, use only PA-free preparations (standardized extracts). Typical use for clinical applications is 50-75 mg standardized extract 2-3 times daily for migraine prevention; lower amounts for allergy support. Standard butterbur root powder (not PA-free processed) should not be used internally.
