about this product
Fo-Ti / He-Shou-Wu (Polygonum multiflorum)
Dried root of Polygonum multiflorum, called He Shou Wu in TCM (translates roughly as "Black-Haired Mr. He") and "Fo-Ti" in popular Western markets. One of the most prized longevity tonics in Traditional Chinese Medicine, classified as a "longevity herb" and traditionally associated with hair color preservation, kidney and liver support, and general anti-aging tonic effects.
Important: Prepared vs Unprepared
He Shou Wu has two distinct forms in TCM with very different uses: Sheng Shou Wu (unprepared/raw) - has strong laxative effects and is used for shorter-term conditions; Zhi Shou Wu (prepared) - processed with black bean broth, used as the longevity tonic. The prepared form is what is traditionally taken as a daily tonic. Check labeling for which form a product is.
Safety Information
Rare cases of liver toxicity have been documented with He Shou Wu use, particularly with raw/unprepared forms. The risk appears low but real. Discontinue and consult a healthcare provider if signs of liver issues develop (jaundice, dark urine, persistent fatigue, abdominal pain). Not recommended during pregnancy.

The Chinese name "He Shou Wu" literally translates as "Black-Haired Mr. He" - referring to a legend about an old man named He whose hair returned to black after taking the herb.
How to Use Fo-Ti
Decoction: simmer 1 teaspoon of prepared root in 8 oz water for 15-20 minutes; strain. Capsules: encapsulated prepared root; typical use is 1-2 capsules daily. Traditional pattern: daily long-term use of the prepared form for longevity tonic benefit.
