about this product
Goldenseal Root Powder (Hydrastis canadensis)
Ground root of Hydrastis canadensis, Goldenseal, the small native American woodland herb that has been one of the most-used herbs in Western herbalism since the 1800s. Goldenseal contains the alkaloid berberine (along with hydrastine and related alkaloids), giving the root its distinctive bright yellow color and bitter character.
Sustainability and Sourcing
Wild Goldenseal populations have been seriously depleted by overharvesting. The species is listed on CITES Appendix II (regulating international trade) and is considered threatened or endangered in many US states. We source Goldenseal exclusively from cultivated supply (not wild-harvested) to support the species' recovery.

What is Goldenseal?
Goldenseal is a small perennial woodland herb native to the eastern North American forests. Native peoples (particularly Cherokee and Iroquois) used the bright yellow root medicinally; the herb entered mainstream Eclectic Western herbalism in the 1800s and became one of the most-used American herbs by the early 1900s. The root contains substantial berberine, the yellow alkaloid also found in Oregon grape, barberry, and several other unrelated plants - modern research on berberine for various conditions has revived attention on Goldenseal.
Important Safety Information
Goldenseal should not be used during pregnancy (the alkaloids can affect uterine tone). Not recommended for infants. Can interact with various medications metabolized by liver enzymes. Generally used short-term rather than continuously. Consult a healthcare provider.
How to Use Goldenseal Powder
Capsules: fill size 00 capsules; typical use is 1-2 daily, short-term. Tea: simmer 1/2 teaspoon in 8 oz water for 10 minutes; strain. The flavor is intensely bitter. Tincture (often available): alcohol extracts the alkaloids effectively.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Goldenseal used for?
Traditional Western herbal use as an antimicrobial and immune-supporting herb.
Why is Goldenseal threatened?
Decades of overharvesting from wild populations have depleted natural stands. The species is now CITES Appendix II.
What is berberine?
The yellow isoquinoline alkaloid responsible for much of Goldenseal's color and pharmacology. Also found in unrelated plants like Oregon grape and barberry.
Is Goldenseal sustainable?
Only when sourced from cultivated supply, not wild-harvested. We source cultivated only.
Is Goldenseal safe during pregnancy?
No; not recommended during pregnancy.
Can I substitute Oregon grape or barberry?
Both contain berberine and have overlapping use; they're also much more sustainable choices.
