What is Licorice Powder?
Licorice Powder is the ground dried root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, a perennial legume in the pea family (Fabaceae). It is the same root as our cut-and-sifted Licorice, processed into a powder that is ready for capsules, smoothies, and baking.
About the plant
Licorice root is naturally sweet, about 50 times sweeter than sugar, owing to the compound glycyrrhizin. It is one of the most widely used herbs in both Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is called gan cao and traditionally classed as a "harmonizer," and in Western herbalism. The candy that bears its name originally drew on the root, though most modern "licorice" candy uses anise flavoring instead.
