about this product
Psyllium Seed (Plantago ovata)
Whole seeds of Plantago ovata, Psyllium, the South Asian relative of common Plantain (Plantago major). Psyllium seeds are exceptionally rich in soluble fiber - the seed husks (psyllium husk) form a gel when mixed with water, providing the bulk-forming fiber found in many commercial fiber supplements (such as Metamucil). The whole seed contains both the husk and the inner seed.

What is Psyllium?
Psyllium is a small plant native to western and South Asia, primarily India where most commercial psyllium is grown. The medicinal part is the small seeds (and particularly the husks of the seeds). When the seeds are mixed with water, the mucilage in the husk absorbs water and forms a gel - this bulk-forming gel provides the traditional digestive bulk for which psyllium is famous. Modern Western fiber supplements (Metamucil and similar) are based on psyllium husk.
Important Use Instructions
Always take psyllium with substantial water (at least 8 oz of water per teaspoon of seeds or husk). The seeds swell dramatically in water - if taken without enough water, they can swell in the throat or esophagus, posing a choking hazard. Take immediately after mixing; the mixture thickens within minutes. Drink additional water after.
How to Use Psyllium Seeds
Standard preparation: stir 1-2 teaspoons of whole seeds (or 1 teaspoon of husk) into 8-12 oz of water; drink immediately; follow with additional water. The traditional Indian preparation soaks the whole seeds in water for several hours before drinking. Capsules: encapsulated for measured dosing. Take separately from medications (psyllium's absorption properties can affect medication absorption - take medications 1-2 hours before or after psyllium).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Psyllium used for?
Bulk-forming fiber supplementation and traditional digestive support.
What's the difference between whole seeds and husk?
Whole seeds contain both the soluble-fiber husk and the inner seed; husk is the husk only (typically more concentrated for fiber).
Is psyllium the same as Metamucil?
Yes; psyllium husk is the active ingredient in Metamucil and many other commercial fiber supplements.
Why is hydration so important?
Psyllium swells dramatically in water; insufficient water intake can cause swelling in the throat/esophagus (choking hazard).
Can I take it with medications?
Not at the same time; psyllium can affect medication absorption. Take medications 1-2 hours before or after psyllium.
Is it safe daily?
Yes with adequate hydration; daily use is common.
