About the plant

Oregon Grape is an evergreen shrub in the barberry family (Berberidaceae), the state flower of Oregon, and one of the most abundant berberine-bearing plants of the Pacific Northwest. The bright yellow color of the root comes from berberine and related isoquinoline alkaloids, which alcohol extracts well. It is widely regarded as a more sustainable regional source relative to conservation-pressured Goldenseal.
