What is Cedarwood Essential Oil?
Cedarwood Essential Oil is the steam-distilled essential oil of Cedrus atlantica. It is drawn from the wood of the plant. Several different trees are sold as cedarwood oil, so profiles vary by species.
About the oil
The name cedarwood covers oils from several unrelated trees, all sharing a warm woody scent. The most prized for fragrance is Atlas cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco; Himalayan cedarwood (Cedrus deodara) is similar. Confusingly, Virginia or Eastern red cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) is actually a juniper rather than a true cedar, and Texas cedarwood (Juniperus ashei) is another juniper. All are steam-distilled from the wood.
Cedarwood is a longtime base note in perfumery and has a traditional reputation in cabinetry and linen storage, where cedar wood itself was valued for its scent.
