about this product
Anise Seed Powder (Pimpinella anisum)
Ground seeds of Pimpinella anisum, European Anise (also called Aniseed), the small Mediterranean herb whose seeds have the characteristic licorice flavor. What is Anise?
European Anise is a small annual herb native to the Eastern Mediterranean and Southwest Asia. The seeds have been used in culinary and medicinal applications since ancient Greek and Roman times - Egyptian papyri document anise use over 4,000 years ago. Anise is essential to several traditional liqueurs (Pernod, Pastis, Ouzo, Sambuca, Arak, Anisette, and many others - these all feature anise as the primary aromatic).
How to Use Anise Seed Powder
Baking: pizzelles, biscotti, German Anisbrötchen, Italian pizzelle, holiday baking. Tea: stir 1/2 teaspoon into 8 oz hot water; steep 5 minutes; strain. Traditional digestive after-meal tea, particularly in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions. Liqueur infusion: anise seeds in vodka or grain alcohol produce homemade anise liqueur. Spice blends: ingredient in some Italian and Middle Eastern spice blends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Anise the same as Star Anise?
Different plants in different families. Both contain anethole (the licorice-flavor compound) but come from different plants. European Anise (Pimpinella) is a small Mediterranean herb; Star Anise (Illicium) is from a Chinese tree.
What liqueurs contain anise?
Pernod, Pastis, Ouzo, Sambuca, Arak, Anisette - many traditional liqueurs feature anise as primary aromatic.
Why does it turn cloudy with water?
Anethole is poorly water-soluble - when anise-containing liqueurs are diluted with water, the anethole comes out of solution and creates a cloudy "louche" effect. Classic visual feature of Pernod, Ouzo, etc.
Can I substitute it for star anise?
Yes, generally interchangeable. Use approximately twice as much anise seed as star anise (star anise is more potent).
What dishes use anise?
Italian pizzelles and biscotti, German anise breads, Middle Eastern bread, holiday baking.
Is it the same as fennel?
Different plants in the same family. Both contain anethole and have similar licorice flavor.
