What is loose white sage?

These are loose dried leaves of Salvia apiana, California white sage, the silver-white aromatic shrub of the Southern California and Baja California chaparral. The loose format is the frugal way to burn white sage: a small pinch in a heatproof dish at a time, rather than a whole bundle.

Cultural context and sustainability

White sage is sacred to many Indigenous peoples of California, and smudging with it is a documented practice in many Indigenous North American traditions. Its commercial popularity outside those traditions has come at a cost: wild white sage populations have been significantly overharvested in recent decades, and the plant's chaparral habitat recovers slowly. For that reason we source white sage exclusively from cultivated supplies or verified sustainable harvesters, never from unverified wild picking. If you burn white sage, using it sparingly is both practical and respectful, and the loose format makes that easy.

Aroma and burning

White sage smoke is sharp and herbaceous with subtle resinous undertones, distinct from both culinary sage and the peppery Artemisia "sages" of the Great Basin. Place a small pinch in a heatproof bowl with sand or ash, light it until it smolders, and blow out any flame. Extinguish by pressing into the sand.
