That resin changes how the stick burns: yerba santa smolders more slowly than most smudge herbs and releases a warm, herbaceous, slightly resinous smoke that is distinct from both sage and cedar. The plant carries documented ceremonial history among multiple Indigenous Californian peoples, including the Maidu, Miwok, Yokuts, and Pomo.
