about this product

What is Hawaiian kava?

Hawaiian Root Powder is Hawaiian-grown noble kava root, ground for traditional preparation. In Hawaiian tradition kava is called "'awa" (with the okina, a glottal stop). The plant arrived in Hawaii with the original Polynesian voyaging settlers and has been part of Hawaiian culture ever since. It is Piper methysticum root.

Where our Hawaiian Kava comes from

This kava is grown in Hawaii, which gives it a distinct, small-scale origin compared with the larger South Pacific exporters. Hawaiian kava is comparatively rare on the US market.

Our Hawaiian Kava is third-party lab tested for heavy metals, microbial contaminants, and kavalactone content. A Certificate of Analysis is available on request.

Hawaiian kava vs. other origins

Hawaiian kava is one of several origins we carry:

  • Hawaiian ('awa) — small-batch, Hawaiian-grown noble kava.
  • Vanuatu — the heart of kava cultivation.
  • Fiji Waka — Fijian lateral-root grade.

How kava is traditionally prepared

Kava root is traditionally prepared by kneading the ground root in water and straining out the fibrous material, which yields the classic Pacific Islander kava beverage served across Vanuatu, Fiji, and the wider Pacific. Ground root powder is the form used for that traditional preparation; a strainer bag or a shaker such as the AluBall makes it quicker.

Hawaiian Kava Root Powder & Capsules

Hawaiian Kava is available as traditional ground root powder and as pre-filled capsules. Powder is sold by weight for traditional preparation; capsules are pre-filled with the same ground root. The kava is identical; only the format differs.

Storage

Store kava powder in an airtight container, away from heat, light, and humidity. Kept cool and dry, Hawaiian Kava holds its quality for a long time.
